Family Background:
Penius’ mother has persevered through many challenges to provide her children with opportunities. Ms. Mwale's mother died when she was very young. She then stayed with her father until he died when she was 18 years old. No one was around to take care of her, and she dropped out of school before the end of Grade 9. She did not write her Grade 9 exams and started looking for work instead.
Ms. Mwale has been employed as a maid with irregularity since that time and she been a maid in various homes. She has three children, and all attend Chibelo Basic School. The oldest is a girl in grade Eight. Penius is the second born. All three children live with Ms. Mwale and she provides for them.
Penius’ mother earns approximately $50 per month and is struggling to meet the school fees and other needs of her family.
Penius' Education:
Penius earned an outstanding academic record in primary school. He attended Chibelo School since Grade 1 and earned the first position in every single year.
Penius was extremely hard working and learned the value of his determination. When he was in Grade 6, he dropped to sixth position and cried a lot. At that point he committed himself to study hard. Ever since then, he earned first position.
His favorite subjects at Chibelo were English and Math with his highest grades in English.
At Ibex Hill Secondary School (Grade 8):
Penius continued to value the importance of a good education. At Ibex Hill his favorite subject switched to science, but he still did his best to apply an equal amount of effort in all the subjects he was taking. As he has applied the right amount of effort to his studies, Penius showed improvement in both science and religious education.
(Grade 9)
In Grade 9, Penius has increased in his confidence and has a very competitive edge about him. He is constantly striving to earn the best grades possible. So far he is consistent in getting A’s with Distinctions and has expressed a sincere desire to continue in like-manner. His favorite subjects in Grade 9 are religious education and science. This year Penius has shown improvement in mathematics and office practice.
At the 2008 awards ceremony, Penius received an award for achieving the 1st position in Grade 9B.(Ibex Hill gives awards for the 1st, 2nd position and most improved student for every grade level.)
Career Interests:
His goal in life is to become an engineer.
Penius' Interests:
In primary school, Penius loved to read story books and make friends. He also liked to dance, draw, and play basketball. Additionally, he loved to read scripture books, especially The Bible.
At Ibex Hill, Penius is now able to add to his interests the love for chess. He also has been involved in soccer and basketball although he hasn’t played in any major games.
What his teachers think of him:
At Chibelo his teachers felt that he was among the best pupils in the entire grade. They also felt that he was a good boy who would go far in his studies if he was supported financially. He is particularly determined and has a strong ability to express himself freely.
Penius' Thoughts:
“I have enjoyed, I am enjoying and I hope to enjoy all the opportunities that I have been given. I have enjoyed the services that KF provides. I really appreciate the KF sponsorship, and even though my words cannot match my feelings, all I will say and continue to say is thank you for making my life easier.”
